New ID for posting on April 1st

On April 1st I posted 3 pictures of micros which I thought were Caloptilia syringella. I had some comments agreeing that the first two were indeed this species.   However, they have now been re-identified as 472 Digitivalva pulicariae, or "Fleabane Smudge" which actually makes more sense as the foodplant is common in our garden. And the picture on UKMoths looks exactly like the pictures on the post.   Rosemary

What's Going On?

Shoulderstripe

Aside from me that is!
Just 3 moths last night and just 2 of them in the trap.
1 Hebrew Character and "new" for the year - 1 Muslin Moth and 1 particularly handsome Shoulder Stripe.
It could be my MV lamp has lost its potency -  I've had it for  a few years now!
I'll give the new trap an airing tonight to see if it improves things.

A few new things

A Streamer was a new moth for me (I've been waiting for this one!) and the first Poplar Hawk-moth of the year - both on the nearby wall and not in the trap. First Flame Shoulder of the year and a couple of Green Carpets by the outside light last night. 14 species in total by outside light and in trap (Green Carpet was the only moth in both places).

V- pug

When I check the Glamorgan Moth Blog I'm greatly comforted by the fact that their recent findings are as sad as mine!!! Friday night I caught 4 Hebrew Characters and 1 Common Quaker. Last night 1 Hebrew Character in the trap and 1 more practicing swimming in a nearby puddle. The good news was a v pug on the soffit by the patio door. Perhaps, just perhaps, we can blame the full moon!   mike

Mystery moth turns into Garden Carpet

By the outside light last night was a small moth with closed wings, looking very like a small butterfly. I took some pictures and looked in the books - I noticed that in Manley there was a picture of mating Pretty Chalk Carpets which showed a similar underwing pattern so I though it must be some kind of carpet. I went back out to have another look and lo! it had flattened its wings and it was a Garden Carpet. Presumably it was newly emerged and had crawled up the wall to finish off the wing-drying process? Or do carpets often rest like this - I have never seen it before. Rosemary

Moth Group

Would anyone be interested in forming a moth group where we can trap at various sites over Pembrokeshire and share our moth tales with each other. If anyone is interested we can have a first meeting to discuss a plan and run a trap at St Marys Church, Pwllcrochan (head for the Powerstation and keep on going until you come to the church) at a time still to be arranged (sorry!). If you are interested please let me know and I will be in touch as soon as the venue can be booked.
